Jako młody gitarzysta dorastający w San Francisco, Charlie Hunter szukał sposobu, aby się wyróżnić. Jego głównymi inspiracjami byli gigant jazzu Joe Pass oraz płynnie grający Tuck Andress (z duetu wokalno-gitarowego Tuck & Patti).
